Shrimp Soup

Whenever my Peruvian friend Francisco Marquez de Tapilia comes to town, it’s always an exciting (but nervous) time for me. Exciting because inevitably the visit will include a lot of food, fun and laughter.  Nervous because most visits require constant surveillance to mitigate dubious traffic stops.

Francisco and I spend hours debating where to eat and which are the best Latino restaurants in Nashville.  During Francisco’s last visit, we had a semi-heated argument about the best restaurant to get an authentic bowl of Mexican soup.

Is it the menudo at Las Americas?  The posole at El Manjar?   This visit, I am determined to win our debate with a visit to La Hacienda’s on Nolensville Road.  Hands down, the best Mexican soup in town is the Shrimp Soup (Caldo de Camarón) served at La Hacienda’s.

As we drive to La Hacienda’s, Francisco shared with me the concern in the Latino community about the political climate across the United States.  I listen attentively, but helplessly, to my friend’s consternation.  As we arrive at the restaurant, our conversation has rendered us both silent and introspective.

As we enter the restaurant, familiar smells welcome me.  I smile.  I am going to win this debate hands down!!  We both move briskly to my favorite corner table near the window.  Our melancholy has turned to anticipation of what will certainly be great conversation, friendship and fun.

When the waiter arrives, we both order a large bowl of the Shrimp Soup (Caldo de Camarón) and an ice cold Piña Jarritos.  I also order my obligatory small order of rice.

As we await our meal, as usual, the first question Francisco asks is, “so, when are you going to visit Machu Picchu”.  Soon, I say, soon.  As usual, our conversation progresses at a rapid speed.  It flows effortlessly as if we are trying to catch up on missed conversations from days gone by.

Soon our meal arrives.  As usual, the Caldo de Camarón is delicious.  This tomato-based soup is garnished with cilantro, chopped onion and lime.  And served with corn or flour tortillas.  The soup is thick and hearty and slightly spicy.  Chunks of sliced carrots and potatoes fill this delicious soup.  The shrimp are plump, tasty, and are accentuated by the spice of the chipotle chiles.

After Francisco takes his first bite, I stare eagerly at him in anticipation of his response.  After a pause for effect he says, “okay, you’re right”. “Buen provecho, friend”, he said.

Yes, I win!!!

As we leave the restaurant, I am reminded of Francisco’s unwavering work ethic and his love of America.  When I drop Francisco off at his car, my trepidation for my friend returns.  “Be safe”, I say.  “I will be fine, he replies”.  As Francisco drives off I say to myself  “Francisco needs our country…..and our country needs Francisco”.
